What type of care will my pet get during surgery?

The safety and comfort of your loyal companion is always a priority when they are with us. Before surgery, our team has various precautions in place to ensure your pet has a successful procedure. Our team will perform pre-anesthetic testing which will include bloodwork and could extend to ultrasounds or X-rays. During procedures that require general anesthesia, we monitor our patients closely to keep them as safe as possible. A veterinary technician will continually assess your pet's heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs to help prevent complications.

How is anesthesia given to my pet?

For some procedures, your pet will need to be administered general anesthesia so they will be unconscious and pain-free. We begin most general anesthetic procedures by giving a sedative to help the pet relax, as well as decrease any anxiety and pain. We then administer an intravenous drug to provide complete anesthesia and place a breathing tube into the patient's trachea (windpipe). To maintain the state of unconsciousness, we deliver a gas anesthetic in combination with oxygen through the breathing tube.

What types of surgeries does your hospital offer?

We have a state-of-the-art surgical suite where we safely perform a variety of procedures. We offer different types of orthopedic surgeries in-house where we have board-certified specialists come into our hospital. Our veterinarians also perform soft tissue surgeries which includes anything not associated with a bone. There are many different types of surgeries that fall into this category. Some examples include:

  • Skin Surgery - Probably the most common soft tissue surgery performed is the removal of skin masses or lumps on animals. Once removed, these lumps can be analyzed by a pathologist to determine whether they are non-harmful and benign or more serious cancerous lumps. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet. Cuts and lacerations to the skin are also common injuries among pets. Many times, we will stitch the wounds closed to reduce the chance of infection, improve healing time, and reduce scarring.
  • Digestive Tract Surgery - Sometimes our pets ingest foreign objects, which can cause blockage in the digestive tract. Surgery may be needed to remove an item from the stomach or small intestine.
  • Bladder Surgery - Bladder stones are common in certain breeds of dogs and cats. Depending on the history of the illness, surgical removal of the stones in the bladder may be recommended.
