Education: University of Guelph

Dr. Joanne Best (Hospital Director)

Dr. Best received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Guelph in 1978 and was the recipient of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Award for “Excellence in Small Animal Clinics”.

As a student, Dr. Best worked in clinics from Mississauga to Alberta. After graduation, she worked first in Mississauga and, since 1980 at the present location, the Animal Hospital of Oakville. The practice here has grown from the old building with one veterinarian and one technician, to the modern facilities with six associate veterinarians and a support staff of twenty.

Dr. Best has served her profession in many roles: Hospital Director of the American Animal Hospital Association, and President of the Mississauga Academy of Veterinary Medicine. She has been a member of the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association since 1980 and has served in a number of capacities.

  • Member of the Board of Directors
  • Chair of the Legislation committee
  • Member of the Executive Committee
  • Chair of the Social Committee.

Dr. Best has a special interest in surgery and ophthalmology. As a member of the Canadian Veterinary Ophthalmology Association, she served as an Eastern Canadian Representative on their Executive Board in 1990.

In 1994 she was asked by the Ontario Veterinary College to serve on a Steering Committee for DVM 2000 as a small animal practitioner. This committee is looking at the entry-level veterinarians and the present curriculum at the Ontario Veterinary College.

She also serves her community and actively encourages local young people interested in her profession. She still has an active role in the High School Co-Op program.

When she can find the time, Joanne escapes to the ski slopes in the winter and to Lake Simcoe in the summer with her husband Del.
